What Is BMI (Body Mass Index)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an internationally accepted measure that evaluates the ratio of a person's weight to their height. It shows whether your weight is in the underweight, normal, overweight, or obese range for your height. It is used as a general health indicator for adults.
How is it calculated?
How to Calculate BMI?
BMI is found by dividing weight (kg) by the square of height (m²):
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)
- Write your height in meters (e.g. 1,75 m).
- Multiply your height by itself (1,75 × 1,75 = 3,06).
- Divide your weight by this result (e.g. 70 ÷ 3,06 = 22,9).
Evaluation: below 18,5 underweight, 18,5–24,9 normal, 25–29,9 overweight, 30 and above obese.
Formula and Explanation
Body Mass Index is found by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters:
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)
Example: for 70 kg and 1,75 m, BMI = 70 / (1,75 × 1,75) = 22,9.
BMI ranges
- Below 18,5: Underweight
- 18,5–24,9: Normal
- 25–29,9: Overweight
- 30 and above: Obese
